Home / Macavity Macavity, Harlem Kitty Extraordinaire Midori really wanted a cat. Night after night for a year she would deliberately veer offtrack from the short route between subway and apartment to look at the kitties in the window of our neighborhood pet store. We had noticed a few cute kitties in our months of browsing. A shy calico kitty with a teardrop of black fur marking an otherwise coppertone face caught my eye. At first, Midori liked a playful creamsickle colored kitty, which also had a brother, but she soon began to fall for the quiet calico with big eyes. Cats in the window tend to come and go as they are often the cutest in the store. But while the creamsickle cat and the top hat and tails cat (all black fur except for white paws) and several other adorables found homes, Macavity stayed behind. Each week, as she grew an inch in size, her teardrop darkened and our soft spot for her widened. After September 11, we decided that a window was no place for a kitty. We took her home. As it turns out, Macavity was born in Harlem, the same area where the dance we love, lindy hop, hails from.
