Chad & Midori Present: SOUTHLAND SHOUT Saturday, February 14, 7pm-1am The 92nd Street Y celebrates Ragtime and Dixieland jazz on Saturday, February 14, in an evening inspired by the music and dances of New Orleans, St. Louis, Kansas City and the Carolinas. Performances of '20s Charleston, Peabody, Shag as well as a Charleston dance contest highlight the festivities. The evening begins at 7:00pm with a dance lesson in the basics of '20s Charleston, the South Carolina dance that swept the nation in the Jazz Age, and swing. From 8:00pm to 1:00am, there will be dancing to live music performed by famous octogenarian bandleader Sam Ulano and His Swingers. At 10:30pm, some of New York's best social dancers will perform '20s Charleston, Peabody and Shag dances. Following the performances, dancers will be invited to show off their Charleston steps in special dance contest recalling the days of the great dance marathons and Charleston championships. Throughout the evening, hosts Chad Fasca and Midori Asakura will give away prizes to the dancers who can answer the most Southland swing trivia questions. Doors open at 6:45pm on February 14, 2004. Admission is $15 ($10 for students with valid ID) and includes complimentary wine and cheese, light snacks, coffee and tea.
