92ND STREET Y CELEBRATES
JAZZ AGE DANCE AND THE BIRTH OF LINDY HOP

Saturday, January 8, 2005, 7pm-2am
92nd Street Y on Lexington Avenue at 92nd Street
Admission $15/$10 Students w/valid ID

On Saturday, January 8, 2005, the 92nd Street Y rings in the New Year in style with a spectacular evening of music and dancing celebrating Jazz Age dance and the roots of Lindy Hop. There's so much planned, the dance runs an extra hour longer (running 'til 2am)! For starters, the incomparable Michael Arenella's 11-piece Blue Orchid Dance Orchestra will keep the joint jumpin' with a mix of '30s-style swing and '20s-style dance jazz, perfect for dancing not only the lindy hop but also peabody, charleston and balboa (as well as collegiate shag, foxtrot and a dash of tango).

The evening begins at 7:00pm with a lesson in the basics of the Peabody and Lindy Hop. From 8:00pm to 1:00am, there will be dancing to live music performed by the Blue Orchid Dance Orchestra.

Two dance contests highlight the evening, an Olympic-style Peabody race around the ballroom and a Fast Dance (Charleston, Balboa, Collegiate Shag) contest. Plus, three couples will pay tribute to the legacy of original lindy hoppers from the late 1920s, particularly Shorty George Snowden, with a special performance recreating the dance sequence captured in the short film After Seben (1929). The sequence, which features Shorty George, represents a rare glimpse into the birth of the Lindy Hop (swing) and the pinnacle of the Charleston.

During the band's set breaks, we'll play mellow, medium and brisk tempo tunes from the Swing era that have Jazz Age roots.

Doors open at 6:45pm on January 8, 2005. Admission is $15 ($10 for students with valid ID) and includes complimentary wine and cheese, light snacks, coffee and tea.

About the Blue Orchid Dance Orchestra

The era of flappers, flivvers, spats and speakeasies emerges from the past and is brought to life by Michael Arenella's Blue Orchid Dance Orchestra. Arenella's authentic transcriptions reawaken the original arrangements of the 1920s, the hottest epoch in jazz and rhythm. His orchestra, a dapper 11-piece ensemble of hot jazz musicians, recaptures dulcet tones and passionate strains of the original dance bands and territory bands of the 1920's and 1930s. The Blue Orchid's saxophones, cornets, violin, piano, brilliant brass and banjos recall the sweet melodies and red-hot rhythms that fueled the glowing dreams of the Great Gatsby and the flowing brush of John Held Jr. The band plays every Thursday evening at Swing 46 (349 W. 46th Street between 8th and 9th Aves., 212-262-9554).
